Netflix May Have Removed Its Cheapest Ad-Free Plan for Existing Subscribers in Markets

2 min read

Netflix recently stopped offering its Basic ad-free plan to new subscribers in the US and UK. Now, there are claims on social media that this change will soon affect existing users as well. Reports also suggest that Netflix might introduce a free ad-supported plan in certain regions.

Basic Plan Discontinued

A Reddit user, @MeltedInk8624, shared a screenshot showing a message from Netflix asking them to switch plans. The Basic plan was no longer listed, leaving the ‘Standard with ads’ plan as the cheapest option at $6.99 (around Rs. 580) per month.

The user expressed frustration, saying, “So you’re telling me that even after getting a plan that’s paid monthly, they locked certain shows behind a paywall??! I’m already paying for this service, why do I need to pay more?!”

Other Subscription Options

For those who prefer an ad-free experience, Netflix offers more expensive plans. The Standard plan costs $15.49 (around Rs. 1,300) per month and includes Full HD streaming on two devices simultaneously. The Premium plan, at $22.99 (around Rs. 1,900) per month, allows 4K streaming on up to four devices.

Popularity of Ad-Supported Plans

Netflix claims its ad-supported plan is very popular, with 40 million active users globally. According to Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s President of Advertising, 40% of new sign-ups in regions where this plan is available choose the ad-supported option. This is a significant increase from 5 million users last year.

Potential Free Ad-Supported Plan

There are rumors that Netflix might introduce a free ad-supported plan in Asian and European markets. This move aims to attract more viewers, following similar strategies by other TV networks. In 2021, Netflix tested a free plan for Android users in Kenya, but it was discontinued a year later.

Availability in India

Currently, the Basic plan is still available to existing subscribers in India, indicating that the change hasn’t been implemented in the country yet.

Conclusion

As Netflix explores new subscription models, including the potential launch of a free ad-supported plan, users worldwide are reacting to these changes. The company’s shift towards ad-supported options reflects a broader trend in the streaming industry, aiming to balance affordability with access to a wide range of content.
