Google is expanding its Android Device Streaming program by offering early access to developers, allowing them to remotely access and test devices from major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo. This initiative, which was first introduced at Google’s I/O 2024 event in June, is part of a broader effort to enhance app development by providing access to a wider range of physical devices directly through Android Studio.
Android Device Streaming Early Access Program
In a recent blog post, Google announced the expansion of its Android Device Streaming program, which is now open to OEMs. This program allows developers to connect with device labs set up by OEMs around the world, providing remote access to physical devices for testing and optimizing their apps. The early access phase includes popular OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo, giving developers the opportunity to work with flagship models, foldable devices, and other handsets running Android 14 and earlier versions.
How Android Device Streaming Works
Android Device Streaming is integrated with Android Studio, enabling developers to access a wide array of devices hosted by OEMs remotely. This allows them to test their apps across different orientations, form factors, and operating system versions. The program ensures that the devices available through this platform offer the same level of performance, stability, and security as those hosted directly by Google.
Through Android Device Streaming, developers can use essential tools like Debugger, Profiler, Device Explorer, Logcat, and Compose Live Edit to communicate with these remote devices. This enhances the ability to diagnose issues, optimize performance, and ensure app compatibility across various devices without needing physical access to each one.
Enrolling in the Program
Google has made the enrollment process straightforward for developers interested in joining the Android Device Streaming Early Access program. Developers can sign up by filling out a form provided by Google. Once accepted, they will gain access to the OEM Device Labs, where they can utilize the devices without being billed or having the usage count against their promotional monthly quota during this early access period.
Promotional Period and Benefits
Currently, the Android Device Streaming project is in a promotional phase, allowing developers to access extended testing minutes without additional costs. This promotional period is set to continue until February 2025, giving developers ample time to leverage this resource to improve their apps.
