Apple is set to unveil its fourth-generation AirPods in September, according to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The new AirPods 4 are expected to come in two distinct variants, replacing the current AirPods (2nd Generation) and AirPods (3rd Generation) models. This launch is anticipated to bring significant updates to Apple’s popular wireless earbuds lineup, while also potentially leading to a price drop for the third-generation AirPods, which are currently priced at Rs. 20,900 in India.
Apple AirPods 4th Generation: Two New Models
Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, revealed that Apple plans to introduce two new AirPods (4th Generation) models. The first variant will be an entry-level model designed to replace the existing AirPods 2. The second variant will serve as a successor to the AirPods 3, offering enhanced features and potentially a higher price point.
Key Features and Design
Both of the upcoming AirPods 4 models are expected to share the same design, continuing Apple’s trend of sleek and minimalist aesthetics. However, the key difference between the two variants will lie in the presence of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). The entry-level model will lack ANC, while the mid-tier model will include this sought-after feature, catering to users who prioritize immersive sound experiences.
Retaining the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)
Apple is also expected to retain the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation), which was launched in September 2022. This model, equipped with Apple’s H2 chip, offers advanced features like Adaptive Audio, superior ANC, and Transparency mode. The AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) will continue to serve as Apple’s flagship ANC offering in its wireless earphones lineup.
USB Type-C Transition
Another significant update that could come with the AirPods 4th Generation is the transition to a USB Type-C port. This change follows the introduction of the USB Type-C port in the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation), aligning with regulatory requirements in regions like the EU. While previous AirPods models, including the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3, still use Apple’s proprietary Lightning port, the new AirPods 4 models are expected to adopt the more universally accepted USB Type-C for charging.
Future Updates and Speculations
While the AirPods 4th Generation will likely debut in September, there are also rumors of an updated version of the AirPods Max, Apple’s premium over-ear headphones. Although details are scarce, this new model could also feature a USB Type-C port and possibly support wired audio playback for lossless audio on Apple Music.
Apple enthusiasts and tech lovers alike are eagerly awaiting the official announcement, which could redefine the TWS (True Wireless Stereo) market with these exciting new features and models. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the expected launch in September.
