Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch an upgraded iPad Air featuring an OLED screen by 2026. This new model would mark a significant shift in the iPad Air lineup, making it the second tablet from Apple to adopt OLED display technology, following the iPad Pro (2024). The switch from Liquid Retina IPS LCD screens to OLED is expected to bring enhanced visuals and improved power efficiency to the iPad Air, while also keeping it distinct from the more premium iPad Pro models.
iPad Air OLED Model Expected by 2026
According to a report by The Elec, Apple is planning to introduce an OLED-screened iPad Air as early as 2026. This move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of gradually incorporating OLED technology across its product range. The iPad Air OLED model is expected to offer a more vibrant display with deeper blacks and better contrast compared to the current LCD-equipped models. Additionally, an upgraded iPad Mini with an OLED screen could also be in the pipeline, potentially launching in the same year.
OLED Technology in iPad Air: A Strategic Choice
Earlier this year, Apple launched the iPad Pro (2024), which debuted with advanced Tandem OLED technology. This display offers increased brightness, improved color accuracy, and reduced power consumption, all while enabling a slimmer and more elegant design. However, the upcoming iPad Air with an OLED screen is not expected to feature the same high-end display technology. Instead, Apple might opt for a different OLED variant to keep the manufacturing costs down and maintain a more affordable price point compared to the iPad Pro.
Samsung to Supply OLED Panels for iPad Air
Apple has reportedly selected Samsung Display as the supplier for the OLED panels in the new iPad Air models. Samsung’s ability to produce these displays at scale on its A3 production line gives it an edge over its South Korean competitor, LG Display, which operates on E6 lines. This partnership would ensure a steady supply of OLED screens for the iPad Air, allowing Apple to meet the expected demand when the device launches.
The iPad Air OLED model is anticipated to be available in two display sizes, similar to the iPad Air (2024) which was launched in 11-inch (2,360×1,640 pixels) and 13-inch (2,732×2,048 pixels) versions. The current iPad Air models come with Apple’s M2 chipset, a 12-megapixel camera on both the front and rear, and a USB Type-C port that supports 20W charging.
