Netflix May Introduce a Free Plan with Ads

2 min read

Netflix might launch a free plan that allows users to watch its content without paying, but with ads, according to a report. This new plan is expected to be available in select markets around the world. If introduced, this free tier would be below the current ad-supported plan, which is the cheapest way to watch Netflix, but only in certain regions.

Netflix’s Free Ad-Supported Plan

A Bloomberg report says Netflix is considering offering a free plan in Asian and European markets, where other free TV networks already have similar plans. This free plan would allow users to watch Netflix content but with ads. The report, citing people familiar with the company’s plans, suggests this move aims to increase Netflix’s audience.

This wouldn’t be the first time Netflix has offered free streaming. In 2021, Netflix introduced a free plan for Android users in Kenya, but it was discontinued last year. While the free plan may target users in Asia and Europe, the report indicates that Netflix has no plans to introduce it in the US. Currently, the most affordable way to watch Netflix in the US is the ad-supported plan, which costs $6.99 (roughly Rs. 600) per month.

Success of Ad-Supported Plan

According to Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s President of Advertising, the ad-supported plan currently has 40 million active users globally, up from 5 million last year. The company also claims that 40 percent of all new sign-ups come from the ad-supported plan in regions where it’s available.

Potential Benefits of the Free Plan

The rumored free plan could not only attract more viewers but also increase advertising revenue for Netflix. The report mentions that this plan would align with Netflix’s plans to launch its own advertising technology platform by the end of 2025. This platform would offer new ways for advertisers to buy ads, gain insights, and measure their impact.
